Review: Avon Magix Illuminator

I have a bunch of new items just waiting for their turn in the review seat, but I thought I best "clean up" and finish up some reviews I've been planning on doing. I keep a file with photos of products on the "to do" list and every now and then I have to take a look see for ones that have gotten looked over and left behind. This item was one of them.

It is pretty much a copy cat of the YSL Touch Eclat. While I don't have the YSL version, I have tried Yves Rocher's. I can't say I am really that thrilled with it, and since reviewing I haven't used it that much. I do the odd time when I am rooting through my concealers and it pops up, but I don't consciously think to use it. Know what I mean?

Light applied heavily and swatched. Click for full size, notice the hint of shimmer.

Anyway, this is pretty much the same as the Yves Rocher pen except that the Avon's version has a hint of very fine shimmer that I am actually okay with and goes for $9.99 on sale ($14.99 regular) so it is a steal compared to $50 for YSL. I didn't think it would be something I wanted in this type of product, but it does catch light in the right way and brighten the under eye area. Also, unlike Yves Rocher, Avon has offered a wider range of shade choice with three options - light (which I have), medium, and deep. For under eye concealer I usually go a bit darker than my skin tone, but since this isn't a concealer (duh,it's an "illuminator") I went with the shade closest to my skin tone.

Illuminator applied on left applied to bare skin.

Usually when I use this I dab a bit on after I have applied all my other makeup and blend it in, but for this review, I used it solo to show how well it fared on it's own. I was surprised at how well it did work with out concealer. You can see that it doesn't give full coverage, but it does work to lighten the darker area and brighten the overall appearance.

Overall, I am pretty pleased with this, even though much like the Yves Rocher version, I don't tend to use it much. Have you tried it? What did you think?
