Happy Canada Day!!

Okay, I know that is not typically what you picture when you think Canada, but I just couldn't find any unique Canada photos, a flag is just... well a flag. And really, what could be more Canadian than Bob and Doug McKenzie?

To celebrate Canada Day, I thought I'd make a list of a few Canadian things I love (in no particular order):

Our Money

I honestly don't know how Americans deal (how do you deal?) with all their money being one colour. Actually, how do you go about spelling colour with no "u" is a better question, it just looks wrong with out it. Anyway, I love that our money has a little character and comes in varied hues.

Tim Horton's Chocolate Chip Muffins

Not the coffee ( I can make a much better cup at home, thanks) but I recently rediscovered my love of their chocolate chip muffins. I used to get them when I was a kid, but up until about a month ago, hadn't had one in many years. A friend brought me a dozen assorted muffins, that happened to have a chocolate chip one and it was love all over again. What makes them so good is the coarse sugar they put on top before they bake them. It makes a sweet crunchy top that is just too good.

Tegan and Sara

Actually there is a fairly long list of Canadian music I adore, but since my blog name does come from one of their songs (anyone know which one?) I thought they should get the spot on the list.

Polka Dot Door

So this one is a bit left field, but in my group of friends when we get to talking childhood tv (and somehow we do, way too much probably now that I think of it...) we always end up divided as being either Polka Dot Door kids or Mr. Dress Up kids. While I watched both, saw both live, I have fonder memories of the 'Roo. Any non Canadians reading this are probably so confused, sorry!

The Telephone

Yup, that was us (well, one of us.) You're welcome, world.

Canadian Spelling
A small thing, yes, but it's our thing (well, the Brits too, but it's not about them right now.) The "u" is the most common difference in Canadian English, however their are other little things. Like centre. Actually, that is one I never quite understood...

Joe Fresh Cosmetics

And a bunch of other Canadian beauty companies. Considering the size of our great nation, we don't really have many beauty brands that are all our own.

The Shopping Channel

Any Canadian who has ever tried to shop online has had disappointments. Whether it has been that the retailer doesn't ship to Canada at all or they charge out the butt to ship it, it can suck to live here during those "But I want it!" moments. In steps the Shopping Channel. Not only do they carry about a million different items they only ship to Canada (take that world!) and they have pretty good prices and very reasonable shipping.

Nanaimo Bars

Hailing from Nanaimo, British Columbia, these delicious little guys are made up of a firm- chewy almost brownie type  chocolaty base with a middle layer of custard type icing and a thick chocolate top. So sweet, but so good. Great, now I want one.

Obviously, there is more that makes our home and native land amazing, but I just thought I'd share a few. What are your fave Canadian things?

  1. Haha!

Happy Canada Day as well Bailey!

I like your list, it's fun. Even though I have no clue who Bob and Doug McKenzie are! Well, I guess it comes from me being from Quebec!

I do love Tegan and Sara and I also don;t know how Amarican deal with their money. I guess lots of them have been short-changed in the past haha!

These days I really like "Pinch Me" by the Barenaked Ladies! Even though it's old, I think it's catchy!

  2. Woohoo! Go Canada :) I also don't understand how anyone could live with only green money - I always mess up paying for things and look so awkward when I travel in the states!
    Happy Canada Day, everyone!

  3. @Ms Bubu
Bob and Doug are characters from SCTV. They're two brothers who are... well stereotypically Canadian! They are pretty funny though.

It's funny you mentioned BNL, out of now where I needed to hear "old apartment" I've got a mini obession with it now.
