Swatches: OPI On Stranger Tides Mini Set

I know, another polish related post. I swear I'll have something different tomorrow (June faves, perhaps) but I caught up with some swatching over the weekend (15 bottles and still a bunch I didn't get to...) and I figured it would be best to get to these before they are completely irrelevant. If you follow polish, you've probably already seen these or at least know how often new shades and collections are introduced. It can be a bit dizzying. I keep up with new shades and what not, but I don't always purchase more than one or two (or any a lot of the time.) That said, I was browsing Amazon and saw this little mini set and thought I'd give this collection a try.

OPI mini vs OPI full size

OPI mini vs Essie mini

As you can see in the photos above these little guys are quite small. I had never bought OPI minis, but I figured they would be about the same size as an Essie mini. Turns out they are even smaller ( OPI mini is 3.75 ml Essie are 5 ml) At the purchase price of $9.50 these ended up being $2.37 a piece, so they really aren't very economical, but they are a great way to try a collection you are only lukewarm about.

Skull and Glossbones is a cool gray cream, but with a very slight tint of brown. I love the colour, but I'm pretty sure there are a lot of dupes around. I realized as I swatched that it looked really familiar to something, but what...

Essie Playa del Platinum! Side by side Skull and Glossbones is a bit darker, but the colour is so close to being the same. I don't think anyone would ever notice the difference, so I would say if you have one you can skip the other.

Planks a Lot ended up being my favourite shade out of this set. I don't have a ton of purples in my collection so I didn't have any thing like this dusty purple cream. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised if all of you purple fans have a few dupes to this. It's pretty, but not really that unique.

Sparrow me the Drama is a rosey pink with a wee bit of a dusty-ness to it. Dusty seems to be a trend with these, which I really like. The swatches look a bit streaky, which didn't show up in person, so you'll just have to deal with them. I quite liked this colour on me, I find it can be tricky to find the right shade of pink and this one is really flattering. Again, a pretty shade but not entirety anything new.

I took a quick gander in my collection and found two polishes that coluld have been close Zoya Zanna and OPI Lucky Lucky Lavender. I could tell from the bottle that Zanna, while a similar shade is a fair bit darker, so I didn't even bother swatching. Lucky looked close, but as you can see it is a brighter shade and lacks any dusty tones.

Stranger Tides is an odd shade.. kind of a mix of kahki and gray? I don't even know how to describe it. I'm not so sure I like this one as it seems kind of reminiscent to zombie nails... or what I would guess a zombie's nails would look like. I can't see me getting a lot of wear out of this one, so I am glad that this is a mini.

Overall, this mini set is a neat way to try polish shades you aren't too sure about. It would have been nice if they could have put all the collection shades in it though as I would have liked to try the others as well, but I guess they were hopping I'd buy those in full size. Not happening, just quite yet anyway!

Have you tried any of the shades in the On Stranger Tides Collection? Which were your faves?

  2. Ah thanks for the comparison between Plays and Skulls, I was wondering about those too. OPI minis are tiny and it sucks that they don't have the names on the bottoms (that's why I don't buy them).

    it is pretty, I have a lot of pinks I never wear, but I think I'll actually get some out of this one.

    @Justine
    No problem! I just noticed my first swatch of Glossbones is too cool and doesn't show the brown as well as the comp beneath it.
    I agree, I can't see myeself getting the minis again. I hate that they don't label them. I made little labels to stick on them, because I will never remember which is which.

    I was paying $12 Canadian for a while (to avoid customs fees) but the e-tailer stopped carrying it. I found a seller on Amazon who (luckily) ships to Canada. But, I agree, the formula isn't amazing, I just for for the colour!

    I'm definitely up for a swap! I'll sen you an email soon :D I'm excited to shop now!
