Review: Maybelline Color Tattoo 24hr Eyeshadow

Over the weekend I did a bit of Christmas shopping at Shopper's Drug Mart ( I had to take advantage of the bonus redemption weekend...$250 of free stuff? Yes please!) and just happened to happen upon a few new products. Now, living in Canada usually means that us beauty fanatics don't get items until after their release in the States. Until today, I had not seen these little guys on any blogs. Equal brand distribution across all of North America? Hopefully the trend continues, me like!

As you can see these little pots are packaged to be doppelgangers of MAC Paint Pots. I should have taken comparison photos, because the closer I look at the pots, the more the look to be the same as MAC's pots. Anyhow, this product is much like a Paint Pot: it is a cream shadow that can be used as an eyeshadow or colour base for shadow. As the name would suggest, these also claim to last for 24 hours.

Unlike Paint Pots however, the colour selection is a little sparse for my liking. When I saw these, I was prepared to stock up with a few, but the colours just didn't agree with me. Out of the five or six that were in the display, only two seemed like shades I'd actually use. There was a green that read too turquoise for me, a purple that was too light and frosty looking, a gold... Enough said, I ended up with "Tough as Taupe" and "Bad to the Bronze".

Tough as Taupe is an almost matte, true taupe. I say almost matte because when you look closely (click photos for full size) there is an indiscriminate sprinkle of shimmer. The shadow is firmer feeling that I expected when I first dipped into it, but it still applied easily (swatched with finger, applied to eye with flat shadow brush) and with excellent pigmentation. I found that it dries quite quickly, so you need to blend the edge out fast or you get a harsh line. I applied this to the lid with a brush, but found it easiest to blend the edge with my finger.

Bad to the Bronze is a shimmering medium bronze. I love the colour, and oddly enough, don't have a cream shadow in this colour. It is beautifully pigmented and applies super easily with a flat brush. I found it blended it out easier than the taupe and did not require any finger blending.

I just got these, so I haven't had too many opportunities to play around with these, but I did wear them around at home (one on each eye, yup, great look!) Verdict? They really do stay put and don't crease. The shimmer in the bronze shade does transfer a bit, but other than that these guys are staying put. I haven't used them as bases yet, but I do think that they would work really well for that.

Have you tried these yet? What did you think of them?

  3. These are a new obsession for me! I bought Tough as Taupe (love this shade!) and Pomegranate Punk (the maroon colour) a few days ago and have been testing them out - for me, they perform better than MAC Paint Pots! I use these as bases and they really help to prevent creasing and fading on my powder eye shadows at a fraction of the price of Paint Pots.

    I just went back tonight to Rexall (they have all Maybelline for 30% off so these were around $6 each) and bought 3 more: Bad to the Bronze, Too Cool (white), and Audacious Asphalt (pewter). I completely agree with you - they need more wearable colours - where's the champagne? The chocolate brown? And what's up with the orange!?

  4. @Josie
    They're very new, hope you spot them soon!

    @Jen
    I didn't give them that long, but they did last 8-10, so not too bad at all.

    @amarock
    I so didn't see the maroon, pewter or white. They must have had a smaller display out here.

    I so will keep an eye out for the pewter and the white. And, ewww at the orange! I didn't see it in store, but online, there is not way that orange looks good on anybody!
