mary kay fairytales and fantasy collection

Today is the first dreary, rainy day of fall. I've spent it curled up with tea, Feist and a memory card full of photos to edit. Super exciting, right?

I happen to love fall- the sweater weather, pumpkin flavoured everything and general coziness that always seems to accompany the season can't be beat. Of course, there's always the fall collections too, they're not so bad either. The Mary Kay Fairytales and Fantasy Collection brings mauves, berries and golds for eyes, lips and nails. Read on for the full rundown.

'Applies smoothly and evenly, blends easily and provides intense colour that wears for hours and does not crease. Creamy, lightweight texture glides on without tugging. Blends for a smoky effect. Feels soft and cooling. Colour does not fade. Smear proof.'

These are an interesting little creamy shadow stick that have a cool, almost wet feel upon application. They're creamy feeling yet sheer so they provide a wash of colour with one pass, but a more opaque finish is possible with a few passes. The shades don't look like that of a fall collection as they're lighter in tone than you'd likely expect but give lids a pretty glow.

Golden Illusion is a shimmering light gold, Enchanted Mauve is a slightly peach toned golden-pink (not mauve at all) and Amethyst Smoke is a grey toned silver-lavender.

I found these wore quite well but do better worn over a primer as I had some shifting on the eye when worn without. These make great bases for powder shadows and when used with some smudged liner can create a quick smokey look.

'Provides intense, smear-proof colour with an effortlessly creamy application. Glides on without tugging and blends easily. Built-in smudger and shaper help you achieve any look, from precise to smoky. Lightweight texture feels soft while colour wears for hours and does not fade or crease.'

These liners both have differing formulations with Golden Illusion- a shimmering warm bronzed-gold- being the most like the product description. Mulberry Forest- a matte berry- is a gorgeous shade, but doesn't apply as nicely as I would have expected. It's got a much drier formula than Golden Illusion and skips a bit when applied. Golden Illusion applies smoothly and quite easily. Both wear really well and stay where applied until removed. You have a moment or two before they set, although Mulberry Forest has too dry a formula to really smudge out.

Wearing: Mary Kay Smoke & Shimmer Eye Wand in Golden Illusion and Kohl Eyeliner in Mulberry Forest

Since I  really do like the shade of Mulberry Forest, I decided to try applying it first then layering the Golden Illusion Smoke & Shimmer Wand over it. I added a bit of matte brown shadow to the outer corner and crease and finished with a few coats of black mascara. I have to say it ended up being a really pretty look. The gold really works with the berry and is all fall.

Amethyst Smoke is a lavender tinged, putty gray cream. I love this shade! I've been wearing it with OPI I Haven't the Foggiest as an accent and it looks pretty amazing. The formula of this polish is perfect- creamy and smooth with a high shine finish. Two coats shown.

Blue Knight is a deep inky blue cream. Again, amazing formula- one coat! Great shiny finish as well.

Mulberry Forest is a deep red-brown shimmer with a golden flare. A gorgeous shade that changes depending on the light. Another one coater.

'Moisture-rich, long-lasting lip stain provides full-coverage, high-impact shine for an ultra-glossy look. Non-stick, lightweight formula glides on smoothly and easily. Stay-true colour does not feather or bleed. Keeps lips feeling soft, smooth and hydrated.'

I love the idea of glosses that wear down to a stain and these glossy lip stains are pretty much perfect. The gloss is only slightly sticky and quite comfortable on and as it wears doesn't get thick or drying.
These almost feel balm like as they wear but provide a stain afterwards. You get the most staining from Mulberry Forest- a shimmering deep berry red- in comparison to Enchanted Mauve- a natural pinky-mauve with the lightest amount of shimmer. I can't help but think that Snow White would totally rock Mulberry Forest...

I love the glossiness of these and the fact that you don't have to think about how they're going to look as they wear off, which is a common issue with dark shades, because they wear to a stain. I would love to see more shades of the formula in the future.

Mary Kay Glossy Lip Stain- Enchanted Mauve and Mulberry Forest | Kohl Eyeliner- Golden Illusion and Mulberry Forest | Smoke & Shimmer Wand- Golden Illusion, Enchanted Mauve, and Amethyst Smoke

Overall, this is a great collection. My favourites are the Kohl Eye Liner in Golden Illusion, the Glossy Lip Stains and Amethyst Smoke Nail Lacquer. The 'sumptuous quilted velvet clutch' aka makeup bag shown is free with any $60 purchase from the Fairytales & Fantasy collection. It's a great size and the lining in it matches the purple brocade pattern on the packaging. The Fairytales & Fantasy collection will be available through to Nov. 15th 2013.  Are you a fan of the fall season? What are your favourite fall shades?
