maybelline colour sensational colour elixir liquid lip balm

It's that time again... new lip product time!

Liquid lip balms seem to the be the next big thing, well, maybe. A few brands have introduced them, but I suspect more will follow suit. So far, Maybelline's Colour Sensational Colour Elixirs seem to be the most popular, and after trying them, I can totally see why. Read on!

'Fall under the spell of the elixir effect: Hyper-saturated color, ultra cushiony feel. The new hypnotic lip sensation. A trio of concentrates delivers the color of a lipstick, the cushiony care of a balm, and the glass shine of a gloss. Our exclusive smoothing angora brush delivers a polished , even application and smoothing sensation to lips.' - Maybelline

Let's just jump in, shall we? These have an incredible texture- it's hard to explain though. You can feel it on lips- much like a lip balm, not heavy, but known- and has a slightly squishy feel that feels instantly hydrating. I was a bit skeptical as to how hydrating these would prove to be, but these really do provide a decent amount in combination with glossy shine.

Ah, the shine! These do have a perfectly shiny finish that compares to any gloss. The coverage is semi-opaque with a few passes, but more sheer with just one. I expected to be a bit more pigmented (based on early reviews and advertising) but I kind of like that they're only semis as it makes them easy to pop on and wear without fuss.

They have an interesting scent that I'm just not sure of... It seems fruity at first, but also a bit of  vanilla-caramel twist too? I don't love it, but it's not a deal breaker and it does dissipate pretty quickly.

Breathtaking Apricot is a bright looking coral-pink in the tube, but applies as more of a peachy-pink, with sparse tonal shimmer.

Blush Essence is a neutral mauve-pink with silvery-pink shimmer. This shade has the most visible shimmer of the shades I picked up.

Raspberry Rhapsody is a plummy-pink with blue-purple shimmer. It's not as deep as I was expecting based on how it reads in the tube, but it does me think of cherry popsicles!

Overall, I really like these! Lips feel hydrated throughout wear ( a major plus for winter!) while having the shine and finish of a gloss. The perfect combo really. Have you tried these or any of the other liquid lip balms out? Thoughts?
