Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder | Mood Light

Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder- Mood Light (5)

I've been going around humming Lorde's Still Sane to myself because, well because today is my birthday and it's the one day of the year I can sing that and have it be true. Duh. Since it is my birthday, I thought it was only fitting that I review a little something I got for my birthday from my amazing mom.  That something is an Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Mood Light. Read on!

'A universal finishing powder that features state-of-the-art technology to recreate the most exquisitely flattering types of light.' - Hourglass

I think everyone is well aware of the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder by now, as they have taken the beauty world by storm. I was a totally intrigued, but also a wee bit skeptical about the whole deal. You know? The powders are quite pricy when you get down to it, but Hourglass has made these as luxurious as possible to cushion the blow. The compacts are sleek and well designed although terribly difficult to photograph well as fingerprints show up like mad and their dark glossy exterior sucks up light like nothing else. Anyhow, they are beautifully packaged and do have a full mirror.

The powder is like no other. It's texture is soft, smooth and finely milled giving an almost creamy feel. It's the type of product you just want to keep swatching. When applied on skin, the powder aspect of this vanishes; meaning there is no tell-tale powdery-ness or cakiness. I wasn't exactly sure what to expect in terms of wear and usage from this, but after playing with it, I find it works well as both a setting powder and a finishing powder. I don't get particularly oily throughout the day thanks to my drier skin, but this does work nicely to set foundation and concealer (especially under the eyes) and wears well all day. What little oiliness I can get is minimized by this, but it may not be sturdy enough on it's own for those with oilier skin.

The Ambient Lighting Powders are currently available in six shades that are all created to be universally flattering while mimicking the perfecting qualities of various forms of light. I was instantly drawn to Mood Light as it's description is just so appealing- 'A soft, sheer lavender pink that mimics the softest, most forgiving light and brightens the complexion.' Who doesn't want that?! Brightening might also be my favourite beauty buzz word...

As you can see above, Mood Light is a very natural lavender-pink tone that doesn't change your skin tone, but gives your skin a boost. It's not something that's easy to pinpoint as the finish is subtle, but I like to think of it as a makeup product that looks like you've got better skincare. Does that make any sense? Let's just say that it gives the effect of naturally beautiful skin when applied over makeup.

Overall, I am quite happy with Mood Light! But, I don't know that I'd rush to buy other shades. It does give a gorgeous effect, but it's a pricy product and I really can't see there being a massive difference between shades. That said, if you missed out on the Ambient Lighting Powder Palette that was released as a limited edition product for the holidays, it's back and is now permanent. It was re-released right after I picked up Mood Light or I probably would have opted for it as you can test three shades at a great price compared to buying individuals. Have you tried any of these? Which shade? Thoughts?
