Real Techniques Silicone Liner Brush & Mary Kay Gel Eyeliner

It just so happens that on my very long 'to blog' list, I had a liner brush and a gel liner, which may as well be the peanut butter and jelly of the makeup world. Maybe? What I mean is they go together so well, it only makes sense that they share a post. The specific items getting all lovey-dovey are the Real Techniques Silicone Liner Brush and Mary Kay Gel Eyeliner. Read on!

While I love brushes- and might have a few more than I actually need- I don't think I've ever been quite as excited about a new one as I was about this. I mean, it's not even a brush, from a technical view that is, it's a little nubbin of silicone to apply liner. The idea is ingenious as I can bet we've all had the issue of a splaying brush making a mess of an otherwise clean line when applying gel liner. All that said, I'm not too sure how I feel about this brush...

It's designed to be used on it's side, to glide liner along the eye, but I just find it more difficult to get a clean smooth line with this than other brushes. I love that the stray hair issue has been rendered moot- as there are no bristles to go all catty-wonkus- bu it's just not the amazing tool I had hoped/expected. I think the main issue, for me, is that you have to continually dip the nib back into the product and as such are not able to create a line in one swift, fluid movement. Instead you have to create your line in parts and then go back and clean it up. It's a fine method, but with this brush I ended up with thicker line than I had initially been intending.

Of course, what good is a liner brush without the accompanying liner? The mate I've been pairing with my Real Techniques Silicone Liner Brush has been the wonderous Mary Kay Gel Eyeliner. I don't tend to opt for gel liners, as I'm more of a liquid liner fan, but I might just be a convert now. The Mary Kay Gel Liner is silky smooth and glides easily- with a silicone brush or your typical liner brush- with a deep, dark, matte black finish.

The formula is the perfect consistency, as it's fluid enough to apply easily, but not so wet that it smears if you happen to blink before it's completely dry. On that note, this also dries pretty quickly, but not so fast that you're left in a lurch if you need to do a little adjustment.
As for wear, I was quite impressed that this wore a full nine hours without any sort of smudging, shifting, flaking.... basically, it looked exactly the same as it did when I first applied it. Although after around the nine hour mark it did start to transfer and smudge a little bit. Still, not too shabby at all!

Overall, I am still learning to love the Real Techniques Silicone Liner Brush. I don't hate it, but it's not as amazing as I'd hoped. On the other hand though, I am all about the MK Gel Liner! It's definitely got me thinking I need a few more gel liners in my stash. Tried either? Thoughts?
