Complexion Perfection

complexion perfection 015 copy

I used to think it was all about finding the perfect foundation. Of course, all beauty fans know that finding the perfect formula is a full time job. Sure you might find it, but then your skin changes or the season changes or (warning this is where things get tragic) they change the formula all together. Something I find really helpful when working with foundations is to find products that work with them and your skin to get you to your Complexion Perfection. Read on for one of my current favourite combinations starring Maybelline Dream Wonder Liquid Touch Foundation.

revlon photoready skin lights, am moisturizer and vichy bb cream

We'll get to the foundation in just a moment, but I should preface by saying I didn't like it the first time I used it. The main issue I had with it was that it just didn't seem to work well on my drier skin and the finish seemed a little bit flat. Never one to give up, I got to thinking of ways to make it work (insert best Tim Gunn impression here.) To really amp up moisture I reached for Trusted Health Products Amazingly Beautiful AM Moisturizer (full review) as it's a facial oil that hydrates well overall but is particularly amazing at finding your driest spots and making them history.

On my first trial run of this routine I realized I wasn't wearing any kind of SPF and had Vichy Idealia Life BB Cream (full review) in eyesight so I used it as my sun protection. The lightly tinted BB evens skin tone and hydrates along with SPF 25. It does brighten skin a touch, but I wanted a little bit more of a glow, something that would be more detectable when paired with a foundation, so I added a light layer of Revlon Photo Ready Skinlights Face Illuminator (full review) to my face. Since my first run I've found I can mix a little bit of the Skinlights into the BB cream and get a perfect sheer glowy look under my foundation.

maybelline dream nude liquid touch foundation and miracle complexion sponge

With skin prepped it's time for the main event- foundation. Maybelline Dream Wonder Liquid Touch Foundation is one of the many ultra-lightweight, liquid foundations to hit the market as of late. I've wanted to try one but feared the formula might not work on my usually dry skin as many formulas were liquid to powder. Since this formula made no claims to do so I decided to give it a go. As mentioned I didn't love the result the first time I used it. While it was awesome in some areas of my face it was far from it in others. The satiny semi-matte finish was quite natural and skin like, which I liked (if not a little bit too flat for me) but the way it clung onto dry patches and sunk into the larger pores on my nose was no bueno. Muy muy no bueno in fact. BUT I saw potential.

With added moisture and a little bit of liquid illuminator prior to application, I've come to love the finish this has. As mentioned it's quite natural looking and feels like nothing on skin- it truly feels like you're not even wearing foundation! The texture, is super thin and liquid-y which for me, makes applying with fingers a little bit too time consuming. I've tried a few different application methods but out of them all I keep coming back to the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge (full review.) I apply dabs of the foundation to my face and then blend them out with a the damp sponge. The sponge works beautifully to blend the product onto skin, retains coverage and somehow doesn't just get sucked into the sponge- which I kind of thought it would the first time I tried it.

clarins instant concealer and hourglass mood light ambient lighting powder

While the foundation has pretty decent coverage- I'd call it the heavy side of light through to full coverage as it builds really well on skin- there are times you need to cover that extra something-something. For blemishes, I've been all about Clarins Instant Concealer (full review here) as the shade 02 is a great match on my face and the coverage/formula covers blemishes well.

To finish everything off I like to go with Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Mood Light (full review.) The foundation dries down to a fairly matte finish which doesn't need to be set in the typical sense, but Mood Light works as the perfecting finishing powder to add a little bit of diffused glow. The je ne sais quoi of your perfect complexion team.

On it's own, I likely wouldn't reach for the Liquid Touch foundation much, but when combined with helper products, it's become a much loved favourite. Tried any of these products? Have a foundation that you've been loving lately?
