Mary Kay City Modern Collection (8)
::: press sample :::

Happy Monday, blog fans! I've been patiently waiting to share the new fall products from the Mary Kay City Modern Collection. It arrived a couple of weeks ago, but we were asked to keep it to ourselves until the 16th. It gave me some time to get acquainted with everything, but new makeup is much more fun when you can chat about it. Doubly so when it includes rich shades to get you in the mood for fall. I'm very much ready for fall. Ready for a closer look? Read on!

To start off, there are the incredibly gorgeous Eye Colour Palettes in City Sophisticate and Metro Modern. Each palette comes as in, in a square pan (like most MK products, it's up to you to give it a home in a palette) with a modern, geographic styled wells. The shadows within come in various textures/finishes, but for the most part are either stain or a shimmer/metallic.

City Sophisticate (my favourite of the two) has a satin burgundy shade, a grey-green taupe, dirty cool pink, and an antique type gold which all have a shimmery-metallic finish. This palette has a lot of shimmer going on, but the shadows are super smooth, pigmented, and apply easily. There is some fall out (from both palettes) but I say it's worth it for these shades.

Metro Modern is a bit less shimmery with a cool blue based gray stain, a shimmery brown/bronze with a hint of blue, a pale whitened gray shimmer, and a deep grey with blue shimmer which looks like it should be a blue. The blue shades is misleading, as it's not blue, but seems to have a blue shimmer overpsray.

Mary Kay City Modern Collection Velvet Lip Crème berry stylish

I tend to think matte, or at least semi-matte when the word velvet is thrown in a product name, but the Velvet Lip Crèmes have a moisturizing formula with a fair bit of glossy shine. The formula is very comfortable to wear, with a light feel and medium coverage shades- Naturally Chic (pink-nude with soft shimmer) Oh So Currant (burgundy with a hint of brown undertones) and Berry Stylish (vivid berry). The shades can be layered up for the most intensity, or worn as a wash for a softer shade. The formula hydrated lips for a few hours (3-4) and wears easily with the berry/reds leaving a hint of a stain on lips.

Lastly, nails. Mary Kay Nail Lacquers may be small in stature, but they tend to have amazing formulas. These three, for the most part, performed exceptionally well.

Polished Pearl is the exception, as like so many frosted/pearl shades, you just can't shake the brush strokes. The formula was otherwise quite great. Two coats for full opacity and a greyed, ivory-champagne hue.

Gallery Gray is a an interesting take on gray, as it's got a kahki-green twist. The cream formula is super smooth and easily applied in two coats.

Berry Stylish is a quintessential fall berry creme with nice depth and an exceptional formula... It's almost a on coater! I wasn't expectong such a pigmented, glorious finish, and used two coats, but one could be done.

Overall, I am really enjoying this collection. The City Sophisticate shadows, Naturally Chic lipstick, and Berry Stylish polish are my top picks, but really, there is nothing here not to love... Well, Polished Pearl, but I've just never been mush for that type of pearl/frost finish? What do you think, anything interest you? Are you looking forward to fall hues?
