Demeter Scent Memories (aka All the Smells)

Demeter Scent Memories (2)
::: press sample :::

Exciting stuff today... Demeter! I've said it before, and I'll say it again (and again) I love Demeter. For those not familiar, Demeter makes singular fragrances (for home, bath, and body) and boasts hundreds of options. If you can think of it, there is a strong chance they have it. That being said, they're big into scent memories and how scent can bring us right back to particular times, places, and moods. I was seriously spoiled by Demeter, and was sent a trio of scents that elicit such memories in the Demeter CEO and three scents of my own. Read on!

'When you smell something familiar it triggers an emotional response in the brain. Scent is nostalgic. It has the ability to take you back to a special place, moment, or time, such as the childhood summer cottage on the lake, baking cookies with grandma, a great day at the beach, or an exotic trip to a foreign place.' - Demeter

The Demeter CEO (Mark Crames) is more than just the boss as he also has a hand in creating scents like Rice Paddy, Mountain Air, and Vanilla Cake Batter.

Rice Paddy is a fresh, clean scent that combines green and aquatic notes for a light, refreshing scent. It has a tiny bit of sweetness too, which really makes this an interesting scent. It's perfect for those who don't like a lot of fragrance.

Mountain Air continues on the clean, fresh path. The scent is crisp and... kind of indescribable. It reminds me of when I was a kid and my mom would open a few windows in the dead of winter for fresh air. The cold burst of clean, new, air that zapped life into the dullness that can be a long Canadian winter.

Vanilla Cake Batter is a must-have if you're a vanilla lover like myself. I already had this one in my Demeter stash, so I'm well acquainted with it's bakery goodness. While Demeter calls their scents singular, this one does bring some complexities to the table as it combines a bit of everything needed to make vanilla cake batter- buttery, an eggy richness, sugar, and of course creamy vanilla. This scent is sweet, but not overly so and doesn't tread into cloying territories. It makes a really great blending scent, as vanilla really goes well with... everything really. I particularly like to mix it with Rice Paddy to play up the bit of sweetness it already has and give it a vanilla edge.

Demeter Scent Memories Lemon Meringue, Espresso, and PaperbackDemeter Lemon Meringue, Espresso, and Paperback Cologne Spray

I was able to select a scent from the Demeter scent library (not an easy task, by the way) that was then expertly paired with two scents to create my own blends. While I was tempted to go full on Fall and pick something spiced or pumpkin-y, my love of books won out, and I went with Paperback. The Demeter experts chose to pair Paperback with Espresso and an unexpected pairing, Lemon Meringue.

Paperback is an odd scent, but oddly intriguing. It combines a dustiness with a bit of musk, leather, and smokiness with a hint of violet. While it does give vibes of an old library, it gives me memories of visiting my uncle's house. I can't pinpoint exactly why, but that's where it takes me. While I enjoy this scent, I have yet yo wear it alone as I like it blended with Espresso, Lemon Meringue, or Vanilla Cake Batter to give it fresher, sweeter note.

Espresso is a magical coffee scent that combines that deep, bitter, coffee bean scent with the sweetness of dark chocolate. The overall scent is perfection, although a bit sweeter than I would have expected. Espresso pairs really well with Paperback as it gives it some added sweetness while the bitter notes pair really well with the musty dustiness.

Lemon Meringue is straight up heavenly. While I'm more of a lime fan when it comes to taste, I do adore a sweet and creamy lemon scent. Lemon Meringue is exactly that as you get notes of fresh, sweet lemon curd and the creamy egginess of baked meringue with a touch of vanilla. It's delectable. The fresh scent is the perfect blend of crisp and sweet.

Overall, six scents I love for their differences and blending capabilities. I love that Demeter not only has a huge selection of scents to choose from, but that you can create your own combos for your own personalized blend. If choosing scents is daunting, there are pre-made sets and value sets to get you started (hello, Blackberry Pie and Green Tea!) Some of my fellow Canadian Beauty Blog members have also gotten nostalgic with Demeter, so be sure to check out the link-up below for more smell-good fun. Are you a Demeter fan?
