"She was an American girl, Raised on promises. She couldn't help thinkin' that there was a little more to life somewhere else..."
Every time I start working on this blog post (or taking photos, or editing) I have Tom Petty with me. You see, the theme I'm working with is All-American Girl. Personally, I'm merely a quarter American girl, as my dad's mom was born in the states, but it's not about me. It's all about the new subscription service Sweet Sparkle. Before you roll your eyes at the thought of another subscription box, hear me out. Sweet Sparkle is actually pretty awesome. Why? You'll have to read on to find out.
Sweet Sparkle stands out in the world of beauty boxes, as they don't send samples. For $21 a month (with free world wide shipping) they send you a curated box of five (or more) full size products. The products in each box work together to create the look that matches that month's theme. September's box marks the debut of Sweet Sparkle and comes with seven (the standard five + two bonus) products to create an All-American Girl look.
Jordana Made to Last Powder Eyeshadow Collection in Make Me Matte | Jordana Best Lash Extreme Volumizing Mascara in Black
Revlon Phtoready Kajal Intense Eye Liner & Brightener in Carbon
KleanColor Retractable Waterproof Lip & Eyeliner in Hot Red | Rude Notorious Liquid Lip Colour in Radical Red
Bonus! City Color Contour &Define Palette | Wet 'n Wild Contour Brush
The products in this box allow you to create a classic makeup look with a bold red lip. I really love that most of the brands in this box are new to me. Jordana, KleanColor, and City Colour aren't found in drugstores in Canada so this was my first time using them. As for Rude, I'm not sure I've ever heard of them...
Back to the look; I used the second cream shade in the Jordana palette all over the lid, the light brown through the centre blending into the deep brown. I was really impressed with how pigmented and easy the mattes were to work with. I used the black end of the Revlon liner to tight-line and the nude shade in the waterline to brighten followed by a few coats of the Jordana mascara. I really like how lengthening it is, but it didn't hold my curl (at all.)
I don't usually contour, but when you're face to face with a contour palette, it's just what you do. The City Color contour palette is amazingly pigmented and blends easily. The contour shade is a touch warmer that I would normally go for, but it works out pretty nicely. I followed with the blush and highlight, all applied with the Wet 'n Wild bush. If you need new brushes, try them! The bristles are super soft and they blend powder well. Lips round out the look with the KleanColor liner and Rude liquid lipstick which dries to a matte finish for an easy-to-wear red lip.
Overall, I really like Sweet Sparkle! The price point is great- the Revlon liner alone would be at least $10- and you get pretty much everything you need for a complete look. In this case, I added my own foundation, concealer, eye primer and brow product, but the stars of the show were all Sweet Sparkle. What do you think? Is this something you would subscribe to?
