The Fast Five | Drugstore Edition

fast five drugstore edition (8)

The Fast Five is back, and I know, I have a way for making what I intend to be quick, mini-reviews into full-on novels, but I am trying to keep these mini. For real this time. Anyway, this edition sees us strolling along the drugstore beauty aisles. Close your eyes... set the scene. You can almost hear the sales associate recommending the worst possible foundation match off in the distance...

fast five drugstore edition elf illuminating palette

If you're Canadian, like me, you likely can't find Elf in your drugstore, but we'll bend the rules a bit, okay? The Elf Illuminating Palette is a square quad filled with illuminating powders, not all that much unlike the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders. Oh, but at a fraction of the cost. I was quite curious about these, and have been quite surprised by how much I like them.

The palette is home to "4 gorgeous complementary shades to mix and match for a custom blended radiance that captures, diffuses, and softens the way light reflects on the skin" with a very sheer tint (the last bronze shade is really the only one that gives a true tint) with a soft-focus look for a more radiant, but not glowy in a highlight-type look. The first shade is the most radiant, and closest to a highlight, but much softer than what most would use to actually highlight. The best shades, in my opinion are the lavender, and beige shades which don't read as such on skin, but do give a je ne sais quoi effect you just can't achieve with basic powder.

The Burt's Bees range is always growing, and as such the Burt's Bees Lipstick range has a few new additions. Well, four to be specific. The new shades include Doused Rose (medium, carnation pink), Crimson Coast (medium crimson red), Wine Wave (plum-red) and Orchid Ocean (deep purple-plum) offer a light, glossy finish with a transparency that allows you to wear the shades full-on or more sheer.

fast five drugstore edition rimmel brow this way fibre pencil brow shake filling powder

I have been finishing all of my favourite brow products at an alarming rate lately, so it was time to dip into these Rimmel offerings. For pencil fans, the Rimmel Brow This Way Fibre Pencil provides crisp lines for precise and natural looking strokes, with the added benefit of fibres built-in to bulk sparse spots. I like the pencil, but don't find the fibres to do much.

If brow powder is more your style, the Rimmel Brow Shake Filling Powder packs a major punch in the pigment department with a surprisingly long lasting hold. Now, you're to shake the product and you get a rather satisfying clacking from the packaging, but the noise is in the cap... I really don't think the 'shake' element is anything more than gimmicky spin. Anyway I actually like to use both the pencil and powder together, with the pencil for outlining and defining and the powder for filling in.

I have had this Maybelline Master Precise Curvy Liquid Eyeliner in my "to-try" pile for... a while. Thing is, I just didn't think I'd like it. The idea of a curved applicator just didn't appeal to me. Thing is, again, that it actually works really well. Application is easy, smooth, fully pigmented and there is not fiddling when it comes to creating a clean line. You can add a flick with ease (if that's your style) and the liner doesn't need to be built up for a deep black finish, although it is a bit glossy as opposed to my preferred matte finish.

fast five drugstore edition wet n wild mega glow contoruitn palette dulce de leche

Now is when I would usually say I don't really contour, but I've come to like a little something (usually the Rodial Instaglam Contouring powder) for a little bit of added definition. I also like a bit of a brightening powder to set under my eyes, which made the Wet n Wild Mega Glo Contouring Palette oh-so-appealing. The shade combo Dulce de Leche features a pale, almost banana powder shade for highlighting (and setting under eyes, just saying) and a light contouring shade that adds just enough shadow on light skin tomes. Both shades are fully matte, easy to blend, and in when it comes to the contour shade, buildable.

And that is that. I think I may have actually held true to the fast portion this time (even if there are technically six products... oops?) Have you tired anything great from the drugstore lately? Tried any of these products or want to?
