When it comes to beauty 'trends' some just aren't practical You know, the flash in the pan, Instagram-fueled, fun to look at type trends. Like lip art. Nobody is rolling up the bank or work with rainbow glitter dripping lips. Fun to view, not so much do, but it does give us a new perspective, which is exactly what Maybelline has done with their newest lip launch...

The Maybelline Python Metallic Lip Kits are one of, if not the most, unique products you can currently find in drugstores. The name is a bit... meh (really, python?) but the idea is pretty great.

"It's lip artistry made easy! Take on the hottest beauty trend with Maybelline's Python Metallic Lip Kit. Make an impact in chromatic colour with a python effect. Dare to go wild with bold metallic shine and create custom lip looks in a flash with vivid colour definition and highly-reflective accents."

So, I really don't get the whole 'python look' that's being presented with these, but I guess they needed a theme? If you take that out of the equation, you've got a fun concept that combines a lip colour and a powder topper that gives a metallic sheen/finish.

It seems that in Canada there are four shades in the range, but eight are available in the US. Of the bunch, most are bolder shade combos but there is a more nude-based option (Provoked) so everyone can get in on the fun.

Valiant balm + powder

Housed in a small, mirror-less palette, you find the lip colour, which Maybelline calls a balm, and the powder. The Valiant combo consists of a blue-based purple lip shade and a golden-bronze powder with blue-green reflects (that would not show in photos, of course.) The balm initially feels like a lipstick, but does in fact have more slip and balmy feel that acts as the perfect base for the powder. When applied (I found a finger worked best) it hugged the balm and was not only long-lasting, but almost completely transfer-proof.

Overall, I really like the idea of these! Yes, they're a little overpriced for what you get, even more so when you factor in wearability- you likely won't reach for any of these combos for day-to-day wear. That said, for a night out or when you just need a bold lip, these are a really great option. What do you think? Would your or have you tried these?
