Purple, Please | Anastasia Beverly Hills Norvina Palette

I like to keep up with what's happening in the beauty world, but sometimes... I just don't care. I was feeling pretty meh about eyshadow palettes for a while. Like, how many warm neutrals does a person need? In my case not many, because I've been very resistant towards the trend. Anyway, I wasn't feeling anything, but then... A vision in purple appeared. You know the one.

“I have always wanted to create a palette that embodies my spirit. I’m a dreamer at heart and get lost in my own fantasy world daily. It’s a whimsical place that leaves you feeling carefree. If I had to explain how these colors made me feel, I would say ‘happy.’”—Norvina Soare, Brand President

I'm not usually one to jump on the product hype train, but when it came to this palette, I was ready for it the moment it hit Sephora. Like, I literally ordered it the day it launched. So yeah, this has also been sitting in my 'to photograph' pile, mocking me, for weeks.

This may be what finally prompts the powers that be to invalidate my blogger credentials, but this is my first ABH palette. I know, I'm a disgrace. I chat abut this in an upcoming post, but I have just been on the fence about Modern Renaissance. as many times as I've had it in my cart, it comes down to the fact that there are really only two shades calling me. Norvina on the other hand, was screaming. Just look at those pinks and purples...

While the pinks and purples act as pops to the majority of more neutral leaning shades, the palette itself is all about the soft purple vibe. Now, as popular as the ABH palettes are, I'm surprised at how few people seem to complain about the flocked velvet-like packaging. Nobody worried about offending UD for the Naked packaging... Anyway, as pretty and as pleasing as the texture is, it is going to get dirty pretty quickly, which I'm not super pleased about. I've been putting it back in the box between uses, but we all know that will only last so long.

'Anastasia Beverly Hills’ president, Norvina Soare, designed this palette to be her personal go-to, with 14 dreamy, easy-to-blend shades. The buttery, full-pigment formula means you only need minimal product for maximum payoff. It comes luxuriously packaged with a large mirror and double-ended brush.'

Inside the pretty purple-ness, there is a full mirror, fourteen matte and shimmer shadows, and a double ended brush. The brush seems to be of great quality and perfectly usable. I like to leave the brush in the palette as a just in case measure, like if I should have the palette, but for some reason no tools to actually apply it (aka some odd nightmare situation) as we all know the horrors of storing double ended brushes.

Okay, let's talk formula for a moment. I really didn't know what to expect with these, as it seems  ABH does offer up varying formulas from time to time. They swatch amazingly, they feel buttery, if not a little soft (with some kick up, but nothing outlandish) and the shimmers pick up pretty well with a brush for being so creamy. That said, when I started using them, I used a very light hand as I was worried about potential muddiness- I had four blending brushes just in case things got iffy. But they didn't. The shades have blended with ease, retained pigmentation, but were also easy to layer and build when needed.

The top row is home to the shimmers / metallics. The texture differs a little, but most of the shades have a similar super buttery, creamy feeling thing happening.
  • Dreamer golden pink-champagne metallic
  • Summer warm gold metallic
  • Wild Child frosted pink with a magenta shift. This shade is a bit drier feeling, as it does have glitter as opposed to the metallic-shimmer finish.
  • Rose Gold rosy-copper metallic
  • Celestial  plummy shade with a blue-purple shift. It has a similar finish to Wild Child.
  • Dazzling bronzey metallic with a purple-y shift metallic
  • Drama plummy-purple with bronze shift metallic

The mattes (and matte-esque) shades occupy the second row. Each shade was the same texture, although there are a few non-mattes and two shades didn't read quite how I expected they would based on their in an appearance.
  • Base soft off-white / cream shade matte. This does have a hint of shimmer that is just barely visible when used on the eye.
  • Soul ABH calls this wisteria, which seems spot on, but you could also call it a greyed blue-based lavender. This shade isn't quite matte either, as the fine shimmer is apparent both in swatches and on the eyes.
  • Incense dusty / soft terracotta matte
  • Love cool dirty pink matte
  • Volatile dusty taupey-brown matte
  • Eccentric mustard-y burnt orange matte. This was one the shades that swatched a little differently than I expected, as it does read more mustard in tone.
  • Passion (matte deep garnet) ABH calls this a deep garnet, but it isn't garnet at all to me, being a more brick red with the slightest hint of plum.

Norvina Eye Look

Don't be alarmed. From time to time, my eyes get very dark (as in, they look black.) I never really notice, but I have creeped people out. Moving on though, I went a pretty obvious route with my eye look, as you really can't skip over the purples. I used Base as a brow highlight, then I took Incense through the crease, followed by Soul on the outer third of the lid. I used a damp brush to add Celestial to the middle portion of the lid and Wild Child on the inner corner. I repeated those shades (Soul, Celestial, and Wild Child) on the lower lash-line.

Overall, I have to say, I've been loving this palette. Are the shades groundbreaking? Not exactly, but they are so pretty and very easily wearable. The mix of colours and neutrals makes for a plethora of combinations, although, I do wish there was one deeper matte shade in the mix. I know what I like from a palette, and often notice when that deeper matte isn't there. What do you think? Are you a fan of these shades?
