Pro Fun, Anti Sun | Lightweight SPF Times Three

Every year as spring begins to settle in, a new season beings... SPF season. Not to be braggadocios, but I have had no need to buy sunscreen in years. A bevvy of options ends up on my desk and I'm left feeling like I should probably venture outside more. Should is the operative word, I won't though because I kind of hate the sun, or being in it at any rate. If you're like me and are a professional sun avoider, you don't really have a need for body formulas, but the face is another story. I like to use the summer months to trial out a bunch of face sunscreens so I have the perfect option to see me through for the rest of the year. Daily SPF is always necessary. I have three current faves, so let's get to them, shall we?

When it comes to my SPF, I like to go high. I was the ultra-pale kid (I was an especially pale child) at school with the American purchased SPF 70. My mom would get my nan (who wintered in Florida) to bring back the good stuff you just couldn't get in Canada at the time. SO, when it comes to my products, I'm just more comfortable with a higher number. The Avon Hydra Fusion Daily Beauty Defense weighs in with a hefty SPF 50, the highest offering from the brand. The sunscreen has creamy texture, but it's very light feeling and absorbs incredibly easily. I generally prefer the runny, water-like options, but this just feels great on skin, with what seems like some moisturizing capabilities to boot. It wears very well under makeup, and as far as I can tell, doesn't cause me to breakout. The formula, like the whole of the Hydra Fusion range, features an antioxidant complex to minimize free-radical damage.

Speaking of the thin textured options, the Vichy Ideal Soliel Ultra-Fluid Tinted Lotion is a real gem. With SPF 60 the 100% mineral formula is as lightweight on skin as water and offers up a bit of a tint. The tint is pretty sheer (or a lot sheer) so it's not going to look like a proper foundation or anything, but it does work to give skin a more even, perfected look. I don't tend to use powder foundation all that often, but this is a great pairing as it protects and preps, while the powder adds a little bit more coverage. It obviously protects against UVA & UVB, but is also moisturizing and includes the iconic Vichy mineral water. The formula is water and sweat resistant for up to 80 minutes making it optimal for sweaty and active days.

If you prefer your liquid formulas un-tinted, the Shiseido Ultra Sun Protection Lotion is a great option. As is typical of the ultra-light, watery options, this relies on a chemical formula. While white when first applied, it transforms into a completely invisible layer of protection with no white cast. It is an especially great formula for use under makeup, as it dries down to a very soft, velvet-like finish, akin to that of a good primer, giving a perfected base. It is very easily absorbed, but a little heavier in fragrance than I would like. It's not obnoxious, or overbearing, just more than I'd like (ideally none for on my face, you know?)

Overall, three options I quite enjoy. If I'm pressed to opt for a favourite though, it's going to have to be Vichy. The unscented, mineral formula just gives it a slight upper hand over the others. What do you think? Do you have a go-to face SPF?
