L'Oreal Caress Wet Shine Stain- Pink Resistance and Stubborn Plum

Oh, the dupe. Some may groan, but I kind of like seeing more budget friendly takes on big brand products. If someone can reproduce it (or something similar) why not give it a try?

When I first heard about L'Oreal Wet Shine Stains (which happen to be semi-dupes of YSL Glossy Stains) I was excited to see how they'd fare- even though I've yet to try the YSL version. A few weeks ago I picked up a couple and have really been enjoying them. So much so that I really want to try the YSL version... funny how things work, huh?

'Discover a stain that thinks it's a gloss. Now hydration and shine meet lasting, lightweight colour. L'Oreal Paris Colour Caresse Wet Shine Stain combines the power of a lip stain with lip-gloss luster. This next generation lip stain, formulated with a blend of light hydrating oils and concentrated pigments delivers lasting colour with a glossy finish. Packed with 30% water, Colour Caresse Wet Shine Stain leaves lips soft, comfortable and hydrated for up to 6 hours.' - L'Oreal

As I mentioned, these are fashioned to resemble the YSL Glossy Stains, which I haven't used (I'm not convinced I really need to spend $36 on one gloss... you know?) so I wasn't sure what to expect from these. I initially thought that they'd apply like a normal gloss, the gloss would wear away after and hour or so and leave behind stained lips. Sounds good enough?

But no. These are totally different than that, in the best way! They do apply like a lip gloss- well, the texture is different, but we'll get back to that in a few. Once on, the pigment (the 'stain' part) seems like sinks into your lips, leaving the gloss on the surface. Sounds odd I know, but when you see the transfer (like on a glass or whatnot) it looks clear, making me think the colour adheres to your lips.

So, I mentioned texture. These are quite wet feeling, with a thin consistency. They apply on the sheer side, but a few passes builds up the colour while still being comfortable on. They are slightly tacky, but less so than an average gloss, and they really do wear for hours. I really love how long these retain both colour and gloss.

L'Oreal Caress Wet Shine Stain- Pink Resistance and Stubborn Plum

Bare lips

Pink Resistance is a bit misleading, as it reads as a peach shade with very little pink. The shade is a really pretty peach shade with light shimmer. It's quite glossy and a great everyday shade. This was three(ish) passes for this level of opacity.

Stubborn Plum is a brighter, more pink toned shade than what I expected. It's really not all that plummy. It is a paler take on fuchsia, but a bit more blue toned, with light shimmer. This is four(ish) passes.

As I mentioned above, these are on the sheer side, so you do need to do a bit of layering to get the most out of them opacity wise. The good thing is that makes them more customizable and the formula wears comfortably regardless of how thick or thin you go.

Overall, I am pretty happy with these. I'd say check swatches online (on lips preferably) to get a good feel for what the shades actually look like. The names and appearance in tube is a bit deceiving. I was hoping trying these would quench me urge to try the YSL version, but you know what? I kind of want to try them even more now. Have you tried these? Which shade(s) do you like?
