Maybelline The Rocket Volum' Express Mascara

I love mascara, and I always get excited about new formulas and releases, but, when it comes to reviewing it... I get a bit nervous. As much as I love trying new mascaras, I find them really hard to review. On one hand, there's the fact that mascara is such a personal type of product. Take ten women, and you're going to be hard pressed to get them to agree on the best mascara. Everyone has different expectations and experiences. On the other hand, there's the fact that I find I'm usually all over the place when it comes to mascaras. One day I love such and such, but the next day I might hate it. I swear it's possible to have 'bad lash days' (you know, like a bad hair day.) They majorly suck.

Anyway, I've been using Maybelline The Rocket Volum' Express Mascara for a couple of weeks and thought I was about ready to give my verdict.

Maybelline The Rocket Volum' Express Mascara- Blackest Black* $9.49 CAD

'Maybelline New York offers a new mascara that delivers explosive clean volume in just 1 stroke. The Rocket gives lashes instant impact thanks to with a fast glide formula and supersonic brush. This revolutionary mascara is the newest member of the Volume Express family. After years of research, Maybelline New York introduces a new multi-patented brush that revolutionizes instant volume.
This first to market supersonic brush has a hard, ridged core that loads maximum volume onto lashes with ease. While the soft, flexible bristles glide the formula through lashes evenly from root to tip. The result: Fast volume with not a clump in sight.

I don't know about you, but I kind of love when mascara comes with the brush on the side. I like to be able to get a good look at the brush, and it's usually easier to see it before it's covered in mascara. This brush is fairly large, but tapers towards the tip, making it a bit easier to get to little baby lashes.

As for the formula, I found it to be a good consistency right from the start- it wasn't too wet, and didn't really need a 'curing' period (you know when you crack a mascara, then give it a week or two before using it and it just seems better? Yes you do.)

bare lashes- not curled

Maybelline The Rocket Volum' Express Mascara- Blackest Black* 2(ish) coats, non-curled lashes

When I first applied this mascara, it was just okay, It gave a nice darkened look with some length, but I didn't find it to give a whole lot in terms of volume. I should note that I want my mascara to do everything. I want as much length as possible, I want volume, and the blackest black imaginable, all while not clumping, or giving me uni-lash. I want it all. I know that's almost impossible to find, but a girl can wish, right?

After using this mascara a few times, I've found that a second coat really gives me more of the volume I want, and the formula is great in the fact that you don't have to fuss with it when applying a second coat as it resists clumping/lashes sticking to themselves really well. I don't find that this mascara gives me extreme length on it's own, but when I curl my lashes first (as I always do) I get them looking pretty great. Every girl knows how long their lashes can look (admit it, you do) and this does get close to my limit, but not quite. That said, I do like this for everyday wear. My lashes look defined and naturally thick and full.

I have the washable formula, and find that it removes easily with eye-makeup remover (usually Bioderma in my case.) I haven't had any issues with smudging, flaking or anything during wear which is also a plus.

Overall, I like this mascara, I don't think I've ever used a Maybelline mascara that I haven't liked... but I wouldn't call it an all time favourite. As I said, it's great for everyday wear and does give your lashes a boost with such easy application. Have you tried this mascara? Thoughts?
